The Wolves start the Georgina Silver Stick Tournament with a big win over the hometown team with a 6 - 5 victory.
A much improved Georgina Blaze squad inspired the Waterloo Wolves to come up with a solid effort and eek out the win. The scoring opened at 6:29 of the first when Ethan Wasylyshyn battled for the puck in the neutral zone forcing Georgina to scramble. Ethan flipped the puck over to a speeding Jacob Stark who carried the puck in deep and shoveled a pass over to Cole Hunsberger making it 1 - 0. With the wolves down 2 -1, Griffin Beddis took matters into his own hands as he won the faceoff, then carried the puck through 3 defenders and roofed it past the Georgina goaltender. 46 seconds later, Matthew Johnstone stopped the Georgina rush and then dished the pass over to Cole Hunsberger who fired a blistering shot through the 5-hole making it 3 -2 with 12 seconds left in the first period.
The only scoring by the wolves in the second was by Cole Hunsberger as he picked up a hatrick. Cole grabbed the loose puck at the blue line just as Georgina was getting ready to go on the offense. Cole walked in untouched and tucked the puck under the goalie's pads.
Soon into the third period, Seamus Riley-McKay and Thomas Chan worked the give and go as Seamus took the pass from Thomas where he promptly returned it back to Thomas who buried the puck in the net making it 5 - 4. Quade Willson kept the puck along the boards just inside the blue line when he passed it over to Seamus Riley-McKay. Seamus saw a wide open Cole Hunsberger who calmly scored his 4th goal of the game and gave the team a two goal lead. Georgina never stopped coming and pushed the wolves hard. Super work holding off the attack and picking up the victory. Austin Zappitelli was tested late in the third as Georgina was awarded a penalty shot. Austin stood his ground and forced the shooter to go high and wide of the net. Great work Austin! Very exciting.
Jacob Stark picked up the hardest worker for some speedy plays, solid effort forechecking and an assist.
Seamus Riley McKay took home the team assist stick for his two assist effort on the last two goals of the game. Nice job Seamus.
