Wolves Take Series Opener
The Waterloo Minor Bantam Gold Wolves opened the first round of the playdowns against Kitchener Red on Saturday.

Play was tight in the first period as both teams tried to clamp down defensively.  Late in the first, Matthews won a clean draw in the offensive zone and Henderson's quick shot made it 1-0 for the Wolves.  Jensen made it 2-0 in the second, scoring a power play goal.  Hyjek and Gerth picked up the assists.  Kitchener didn't give up and they narrowed the gap later in the period scoring on a power play of their own.  The Wolves relied on their penalty killing in the third as they found themselves short on a few occasions.  The key moment in the game came midway through the final frame and the Waterloo short two players for a full two minutes.  The Wolves did a great job of killing it off and hanging on for the 2-1 win.  Gies had a very strong game in goal for the Wolves.

The two teams face off again tomorrow in Kitchener.
