The Waterloo Minor Atom A/AA Wolves climbed on-board their
luxury coach for a road trip to Sarnia on a rainy Saturday morning. The Wolves were hungry for a second win in a
row after alternating wins and losses since their excellent tournament showing
at Thanksgiving in Whitby. With Rock’em
Sock’em Hockey playing on the overhead video screens whetting their appetite,
the Wolves rolled into Sarnia ready to play.
The game started off slowly with almost half the period passing before there was a shot on either net. The Sting stung first with a goal off a deflection while coming in 2 on 1. The second period saw the Wolves wake up from their road-trip induced stupor and they came out flying. The defence was solid and made some very smart plays to kept Sarnia to 2 shots while the forwards pressed hard and generated lots of scoring chances making sure to crowd the net looking for rebounds. That paid off when one of our forwards picked up a juicy rebound and back-handed it in on the far-side to tie it at 1 on 15 shots.
With the Wolves gaining confidence, the third period saw them running into penalty trouble and quick whistles during their many scoring chances. The Sarnia goalie was doing well stopping the barrage of shots and the Waterloo cheering section was a bit nervous with the game stuck at one goal a-piece. We feared the dreaded “bad bounce” at the wrong time. Relief came while short-handed when one of our forwards skated through the Sting power-play and scored top-shelf on a nice end to end rush. A second short-handed goal came when our centre, on the forecheck, fought hard to win the puck in the corner and fed the winger standing in the low slot who put it in the goal. That same winger proved to be sniper when he rang his second goal off the inside of the short-side post for the Wolves 4th goal. The Wolves defence remained solid and kept Sarnia to 1 shot while the Wolves generated 16 chances.
Congratulations on the win, boys, and on achieving another one of your goals: 30 plus shots in a game. We are proud of you.
Go Wolves Go!
