This past weekend, the Minor Atom AAA Wolves took their
act to the Steel City for the Reebok Classic.
On Friday morning they took on the host Jr.
Bulldogs. After a
fast start, the Wolves conceded two goals and settled for a 2-2 tie. The boys then rested for their 3-game
marathon on Saturday which kicked-off with a confrontation with the North York
Rangers.
Waterloo fell behind early and, despite their best efforts, came up one goal short in their comeback bid as the Rangers took that decision 4-3. With a loss and a tie in their first two contests, the Wolves needed to rally. They responded. Consecutive wins against Richmond Hill (5-3) and Southern Tier (4-2) earned the boys some bonus action on Sunday. Having punched their ticket to the semi-final, the Wolves took to the ice in the morning to face Southern Tier for the second of back-to-back games with the Admirals. Our Waterloo boys were not in the spirit of giving. Stingy defence and relentless back-checking limited the Southern Tier opportunities. When the Admirals did break through, the Wolves goaltending was up to the challenge. It all added-up to a 5-1 victory and a berth in the final. The tournament final afforded the boys the chance to exorcise some demons against North York. Once again the boys battled hard in all three zones and the Wolf goaltending was excellent. When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read "Wolves 3 Rangers 1". Moments later, the ice was littered with sticks as well as black & gold gloves.
Congratulations boys! And thank you coaches for another great weekend!
