Not bad for 7am
I saw lots of energy again on Sunday for our early practice. For the players who couldn't make it, thanks to the parents for giving me a headsup. Knowing ahead of time if players will be missing lets us make sure the practice plan is gets adjusted if needed.
Top 3 things we worked on Sunday were:
Backward Skating - make sure you get your knees bent and your toes pointed in at the start of your C cuts to get the most power out of your stride.
1-on-1's - If you are playing D then you want to keep the attacker to the outside
- lining up your outside shoulder with the attacker's inside shoulder helps you angle them out to the boards
- another tip is to try and keep the blade of your stick lined up with the attacker's stick - if you can keep the sticks lined
up then whenever the attacking player tries to pass or shoot your stick will be in position to block the pass or shot.
Break- In's - if you have a clean breakaway, then go ahead and drive straight for the net but most of the time the other
teams D will be back
- most of the time the puck carrier will want to drive wide, which will pull the D with you and open up space in the
middle of the ice
- If the C is carrying the puck in and drives wide to the left, then:
- the LW will cut to the high slot and set up to receive a pass and shoot
- the RW will drive to the "back" post and set up to receive a pass and shoot
- When the C gets to about the face off dot he has 3 options:
- shoot on net
- pass to LW in high slot
- pass to RW on back post
