Waterloo Wolves AA/A Finalists in Guelph Tournament
This past weekend the Waterloo Wolves AA/A team competed in the Guelph Power Play Tournament. We battled hard and earned a spot in the finals.

This past weekend the Waterloo Wolves AA/A team competed in the Guelph Power Play Tournament. Our first game on Friday was against the Guelph Gryphons. Both teams worked hard, with each side making some great plays and equally great saves. The game was evenly matched and the teams skated to a 3-3 tie.

With time for a quick breakfast the Wolves were back on the ice playing against the Eastern Ontario Cobras. Utilizing great team passing and positioning, the Cobras were an excellent skating team that played an aggressive fast paced game. Our Wolves team struggled to gain some momentum and ultimately fell to the Cobras 5-0.Ending their first day of the tournament with a tie and a hard loss we knew we had to respond with a very strong Saturday to be able to continue deeper into the tournament.

It was the Waterloo Wolves vs the Sudbury Wolves to start off day number two of our tournament with both packs ready to get off to a good start on Saturday. Playing on one of the larger ice surfaces in the tournament the teams enjoyed the extra skating room and it showed with an exciting fast paced game with both teams having great offensive and defensive moments. We were down a player due to illness and the boys responded when having to rotate into different positions during the game. It was a fun game to watch and Waterloo won the game 3-2.

Our next game was against the Stratford Warriors – a team familiar to us having played them this year in league play. The game was an offensive showcase with a combined 10 goals between the teams. The crowd got to see some great offense playmaking as well as great defence and some fantastic saves made by the goalies. At the end of the game the score was 6-4 for Waterloo with an empty netter sealing the game for us.

After two hard fought but well deserved wins we moved into the Semi-Finals in a rematch against our host team, the Guelph Gryphons. The Semi-Finals game started with a quick goal by Guelph. But Waterloo responded quickly to tie it up and eventually took a 2 goal lead. This game found the Wolves getting a great feel for one another with some of the best passing and team play of the year. Guelph didn’t give up and hung in to keep the game close but the Wolves played smart with some fantastic unselfish team play that led us to a 5-4 victory.

Off to the finals against the Eastern Ontario Cobras. The final game was a battle with Waterloo keeping a relentless attack against the Cobras. Refusing to give in Waterloo kept battling against a very strong Cobra team. In the end, the Cobras proved to be too much winning 7-2. However, this was an example of where the score did not tell the full tale of the game. Waterloo did lose but we were not beaten as we kept battling until the end and played as a team against a Cobra team that was the class of the tournament. The Wolves played very well, earning a spot in the finals and honourable 2nd place in the tournament.
