Minor Atom Select Wolves finish weekend tourney 1-1-1
The
Waterloo Minor Atom Select Wolves narrowly missed making it to the semi-finals
in the Marshall Drewnowsky Memorial Select
Tournament
in Vaughan over the weekend.
In their opener against Lorne Park on Friday, the Wolves quickly fell behind 1-0 on the first shift, but then rallied to tie it up 2-2 by the end of the first period. After a tight second period, the Wolves lost steam in the third, giving up three goals, including an empty netter, in the 5-2 loss.
The Wolves bounced back on Saturday morning against the North York Knights. After tying the game with less than a minute to go in the first period, Waterloo never looked back. Aidan Krueger recorded a hat trick in the 7-2 win.
Later in the day, the Wolves played their best game of the tournament in a hard-fought 2-2 tie against the Milton Winterhawks. Milton dominated early, but strong Waterloo defence and solid goaltending, including a great poke check on a clear breakaway, kept the score 0-0. In the second period, Liam Fast jumped on the puck at the Wolves blue line and carried it down the ice to finally open up the scoring. With less than five minutes remaining in the third, the Wolves added another to go up 2-0. The two-goal lead didn’t last long with Milton scoring twice in the final two minutes to end the game 2-2. The tie put Milton in the semi-finals on Sunday, ahead of Waterloo based on goal differential.
Other weekend goal scorers for the Wolves were Cole Schirrmacher, Terry Witzel, Jeremy Chowen, Michael Huntley, Nathan Mrakava, and Ian Gregg. Goalies Christopher Faclaris and Daniel Bosomworth played each game, and each netminder recorded a shutout appearance.
