Bench Banter: Get to Know Coach Playfair
๐๐ฅChris Playfair grew up playing AAA hockey for the Waterloo Wolves before being drafted 75th overall by the Windsor Spitfires in 2016. During his time in Windsor, Chris was part of the team that won the Memorial Cup in 2017 and served as an assistant captain in 2018 onward. After completing four years in the OHL, Chris moved on to play USPORTS hockey at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson), where he completed Business Management (BComm) degree.

From Coach Playfair: “I believe that every player, regardless of age or skill level, must continually refine their foundation of basic skills. Mastery of these fundamentals, combined with unwavering consistency, attention to detail, and a relentless drive to improve, will allow players to rise above the pack in the long term. My philosophy focuses on creating an environment where players are challenged to push their limits, develop confidence, and ultimately reach their full potential.”

Coach Parker Casey is a proud product of the Waterloo Wolves, where he developed his game before moving on to play Jr. B with the Waterloo Siskins and Jr. A with the Brockville Braves, serving as co-captain. He capped off his playing career in the NCAA at St. Olaf College, where he helped his team capture two conference championships.
Parker now brings that same championship mindset to his coaching. Through his work with Prolific Hockey, he’s helped lead high-level development camps and skills sessions, with a sharp focus on two-way play, decision-making under pressure, and teaching players how to be trusted in every situation.
What sets Coach Parker apart is his attention to detail and ability to build complete hockey players, players who can contribute in every zone, every shift. His philosophy is simple but powerful: “Hockey isn’t just about flashy plays. It’s about effort, details, and strategic decision-making in every situation.”Ben Playfair
Coach Ben grew up playing hockey in the Waterloo Minor Hockey Association, captaining his U16 AAA team in 2013. He would go on to play junior hockey for the New Hamburg Firebirds before attending Wilfrid Laurier University, where he would obtain a Bachelor of Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Education while leading their varsity rugby team for five seasons.
Today, Ben is the Lead Youth Athlete Strength and Conditioning Coach at Depth Training and serves as an Assistant Coach for the Victus Academy prep team. Over the years, he has played a key role in the development of numerous high-performing athletes in the Waterloo region, many of whom have gone on to successful junior, collegiate, and professional careers.
As an assistant coach for the U14 AAA Waterloo Wolves, Coach Ben brings a rare combination of hockey IQ, athletic development expertise, and leadership. His ability to connect with players, push them to reach their full potential, and model professionalism on and off the ice makes him an invaluable part of our program. Ben’s influence extends beyond the rink - he’s a mentor, a motivator, and a role model who helps athletes grow into better players and even better people.Nathan Allensen
Coach Nate began his hockey journey with Waterloo Minor Hockey before advancing to the Barrie Colts, where he played in the OHL from 2017 to 2022. He currently competes at the U Sports level with the University of Guelph, where he also serves as assistant captain. Throughout his playing career, Nate achieved notable milestones, including selection for the U17 Hockey Canada Selection Camp, serving as captain of the Barrie Colts, and being named to the OHL Scholastic Team of the Year. Additionally, he is a U Sports Academic All-Canadian. Nate’s coaching experience includes working with Prolific Hockey over the last 3 years, where he contributes to private training, camps, defensive clinics, and spring hockey programs, focusing on developing players both on and off the ice.
“Through my experience in playing a key role in the OHL and U Sports, my philosophy centers on developing players who are confident, adaptable, and impactful at both ends of the ice. I focus on building strong defensive fundamentals and situational awareness, ensuring players can make smart, timely decisions under pressure. Additionally, I encourage defensemen to play a proactive role in creating offensive opportunities - through breakout passes, supporting the rush, or generating plays from the blue line. My goal is to develop well-rounded players who not only master the technical aspects of the game but also demonstrate strategic thinking and lead by example on and off the ice.”
