Novice Gold Breaks 30 Win Mark
Novice Gold notched win 30 and 31 in the first games of 2018.
On Saturday, Novice Gold became the 2nd WMHA team to reach 30 wins on the season with a 7-1 win over Cambridge Black at Albert McCormick. The Wolves were down two players due to travel and illness, but Gavin S. stepped up to play wing and help out on defence when needed. The Wolves were held at bay by the feisty Hawks until Liam C. broke the seal with a power play goal until late in the second. With the gates open, Ryder H. and Wyatt M. would add 2 more each with Liam M. and Colten T. notching singles between the end of the second and in the third. Grayson P. anchored the defence throughout the game. Cambridge would eventually spoil the shut out attempt by Boyd S. with a late breakaway goal to make the final score 7-1.
On Sunday, the Wolves traveled to Parkdale to take on Hamilton Black. In a tight first period, Ty B. made a series of key saves to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard until the Wolves found their legs. Wyatt M. would open the second with a low blast from the top of the circles to give Gold the 1-0 lead. Grayson P. would then pound several shots from the point with Hunter C. banging in a rebound, and another finding the back of the net to stretch the lead to 3-0. Wyatt M. then made it 4-0. After dominating the second, the Wolves started the third a bit too comfortable. Despite Ty B.'s efforts, the Huskies would spoil his shut out attempt on an odd man rush early in the third. The Wolves would then bear down to close out the game, with Mike B. using his head to block a shot and Grayson S. gobbling up loose pucks in the defensive zone.
Gold remains undefeated in the playoff round and hanging on to first with Kitchener on their heels. Gold takes a break from league play next weekend to compete in the Silver Stick Finals in Pelham.
