Our Minor Bantam AA/A Wolves have had a busy couple of weeks that included video review, intense and creative practices, dry land strength conditioning, and of course, some exciting games!
Oktoberfest kicked off in K-W on
October 7 and the team got in the spirit with its own pre-game BBQ courtesy of the amazing tailgate team and generous families. Players and coaches celebrated a big win post-game with more festing and feasting. Thanks to all who came out and made this such a fun time together!
The boys faced a strong Cambridge team on
Saturday, October 8. This fast-paced and aggressive game resulted in a couple of injuries to an already short bench, but the Wolves kept trying. They killed penalties, sacrificed themselves by taking penalties, and skated their hearts out, but ultimately this was not a battle they could win. After all was said and done, we went home with a loss under our belts.
The Wolves came out focused on
Sunday, October 9, knowing that they would have to bring their A game against the first place London Knights Green team and hoping to give their captain a win for his birthday. The team played hard and stood tall, giving their fans quite a show. The game remained scoreless until 5:39 in the second when London drew first blood. A couple more quick ones by the Knights ended the second period. The Wolves had some great chances, including a huge shot by a forward fresh off the bench from a line change, but could not successfully find the back of the net. The Wolves looked tired, but hung in there, holding off the Knights until there were exactly 5 minutes left in the game. London was able to score 3 more in the last minutes, leaving the Wolves disappointed, but ready to prove that they are a better team than the scoreboard reflected.
On
Saturday, October 15, we hit the 401 hungry for a win as we faced the London Jr. Mustangs White team. Short a couple of D, the Wolves banded together to reinforce that nothing was going to get by our goalie today. He was playing phenomenally and stopped everything that came his way. The first goal was a true team effort by the forwards, keeping the puck loose in order to finally poke it over the line. There was some excitement in the stands and on the benches when a London goal was called back. This kept the Wolves motivated and they solidified the win with a goal from centre ice into London’s empty net.
The Sarnia Sting traveled to Waterloo on
Sunday, October 16. The teams seemed evenly matched and the fans knew they were in for a great game. The Wolves struck first, but Sarnia responded thirty seconds later to tie it up in the first. With just over 2 minutes left in the first period, Sarnia went ahead, capitalizing on a lucky shot off of the post. The first period ended with the Wolves down by a goal and the game continued as such until Waterloo tied it up with a breakaway goal at 7:12 in the third. Not willing to make it easy for the boys, the Sting pulled ahead again exactly one minute later and won the game.
The Wolves are looking forward to their first tournament of the season next weekend. There is a lot more to this amazing pack than recent scores reflect. Keep giving your all boys; we believe in you. Special thanks to the fabulous APs who have joined in and provided help during practices and games.
Go Wolves!
