OHL Draft Targets Major Midget Players
As reported in the January 20, 2017 edition of the Waterloo Region Record, the OHL will be launching a new element of the draft in April 2017.

On April 12, 2017, four days after the OHL has their entry level draft for Minor Midget Players they plan to have an Under 18 draft for Major Midget Players. This will consist of a 4-round online draft. All 20 OHL teams will get 4 rounds, 5 if a goaltender is selected. The draft is open to players born in 1999 and 2000.

The press release included the following statement from OHL vice-president, Ted Baker. "We felt it was a way to enhance the midget category to provide an opportunity for players who were otherwise not drafted to say, 'Hey, there is still an opportunity here.'"

The Kitchener Rangers are mentioned as already scouting the local major midget teams in preparation for the new draft.
