3-1-1 At The Nations Cup In Detroit
The Waterloo Wolves Minor Pee Wee Black Team traveled to Detroit, Michigan for the Nations Cup Tournament on the American Thanksgiving Weekend. Despite three early morning games and two early morning delays due to score board (score board operator) issues, the boys thoroughly enjoyed the event and took great pride in wearing their Team Canada Jerseys.
The team started strong with a 5-3 victory over the physically tough playing 03 USA Eagles. Later in the day the boys were tired and came out flat against the St. Jude Knights Beers Team. However, they never gave up and battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game and add another point to the Team Canada overall total.
The puck was to drop at 7:45 AM on Saturday morning against the St. Jude Knights Albanese team. The game was delayed for approximately 30 minutes while the issues with the scoreboard/scoreboard operator were dealt with for a second early morning in a row. Regardless, the boys played hard and walked away with a 4-2 victory. The afternoon brought the Grosse Pointe Bulldogs: A well disciplined team. They beat us 2-0 and handed us our only defeat of the tournament.
Game 5 had us playing the 03 USA Eagles for our last chance to add points to the Team Canada total in an effort to secure the Nations Cup for all of the Canadian teams at the tournament. The Eagles were more physical than they they had been in the first match up, but the Wolves played disciplined, emotionally controlled and took advantage of the time the Eagles spent in the penalty box. The end result was a decisive 6-2 victory for Waterloo.
Although the boys contributed 7 points to the Team Canada Overall Points total, the USA came out on top and took home the Nations Cup. The boys had a great time at and away from the rink and I heard some mothers and fathers were quite happy with their Black Friday purchases despite the 1.5 to 2.5 hour line up at the border on the way home.
For this year, the boys have a great new Canada Jersey to wear during the World Junior Championships over the Holidays....Next year: We bring home the Nations Cup!
