Red Wolves Stave of Elimination
The Novice Red Wolves rebounded after an series opening loss to force a third game after a 4-1 win over Cambridge Red in the historic Galt Arena.
The Wolves started the game with a flurry and although they were getting better quality shots today, Cambridge managed to weather the initial barrage. The Wolves and Cambridge then traded chances for much of the first with Ty B. making sure not to give Cambridge the critical first goal. Instead, Grayson S. take a blast of the face off for a power play goal to put the Wolves up 1-0 with 47s left in the first.
In the first shift of second period, Colten T. outworked the Cambridge defenders down low and fed Matty B. in the slot. Matty B. managed to muscle the puck between the goalie's five hole to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead. The Wolves would continue to apply pressure until they got caught with with a tripping penalty at the mid point of the period. Cambridge would then use this power play to gain some momentum back heading into the third period.
Cambridge opened the third with pressure and aggressive play. The Wolves would weather the Cambridge storm this time with strong play by Liam M. and key saves by Daniel L-C. The game would open up and the Wolves would get some breaks, but it wasn't until 3:22 left in the game when Ryder H. one-timed a cross the slot feed from Wyatt M. to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead. In a serious case of deja vu, Wyatt M. and Ryder H. would repeat the feat with just 20s left to stretch the lead to 4-0. Cambridge however, would sneak in a long shot past Daniel L-C. with 12s left to break the shut out, but it did little to dampen the Wolves win.
Ty B. and Daniel L-C. took the hard hat and the lunch pail, respectively for keeping the Cambridge Hawks at bay, while Wyatt M. and Ryder H. split the "sweet hands" award for their back to back tic-tac goals.
The Wolves host the Hawks Tuesday night at Albert McCormick in the deciding game.
