Novice Red Drops First Game of Series
Cambridge Red 2-1 win snapped a the Novice Red Wolves 13 game winning streak and puts the Wolves down a game in the league championship series.
A battle hardened Cambridge team came to Waterloo and stole the first game of the series. Although the Wolves dominated play for significant stretches throughout the game, they struggled to get quality shots on the Cambridge net. Although the Wolves were able to limit Cambridge's chances, at times the Wolves looked lost in their own zone. Cambridge would eventually take advantage of a failed breakout attempt to grab a 1-0 lead with 4:59 left in the first period.
In the second period the Wolves would again apply plenty of pressure on Cambridge, but could not generate the quality chances required to get on the scoreboard.
In the opening shift of the third period, Cambridge took advantage of a Wolves lapse resulting in a breakaway goal to stretch the lead to 2-0. The Wolves would respond with offensive pressure, but again, no output. Ryder H. would finally break the shut out with a power play goal with 4:10 left in the third. Unfortunately, the Wolves would waste this momentum, as they spent the last three minutes of the game shorthanded by taking penalties with 3:00 left and again with 0:57 left and were unable to complete the comeback.
After a long stretch of relatively easy wins, the Wolves now need to find a way to win the tough ones and they need to do so quickly. The Red Wolves head to Galt Arena Sunday at 3pm for game two.
