Another One Bites The Dust
Novice Red finishes regular season undefeated in Tier 3 and 14-0 in the final series of league play.
Novice Red returned to the Dickson "pillbox" Saturday night for the final league game of their season against a 2008 Cambridge Red team battling for a playoff spot with a perfect 13-0 record on the line.
Off the hop, it was clear the Wolves were in for a battle as the bigger Cambridge squad refused to be intimidated.
At the end of a hard fought first period, Grayson S. got the Wolves on the board with a hard wrist-shot from down low.
The second was a back and forth affair with the Wolves generating pressure at times but failing to increase their lead. Somehow Cambridge was able to thwart pressure for Lucas P., Colten T. and Matty B. and Rohan J., Wyatt M. and Ryder H.. Cambridge Red looked dangerous on several occasions, but Ty B. made a series of big saves to keep the Wolves in the lead before handing duties off to Daniel L-C.
The Wolves started the third period in penalty box, and struggled to stay out for the remainder of the game. It would cost the Wolves as Cambridge would notch a power play goal with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game as they out muscled the Wolves in front of the net. The Wolves would then generate several chances and just when it looked like Cambridge was going to deny the Wolves the win, Grayson S. notched his second of the game after Boyd S. kept the puck in the Cambridge zone. Cambridge would pull the goalie and make several attempts to draw the tie, but Daniel L-C. kept the door shut with help from Mike B. and Matthew P.
Grayson S. took the hard hat home for his two goal effort, Lucas P. received the "sweet hands" for numerous "shake and bake" applications to Cambridge defenders, while Boyd S. received the lunch pail for solid stay at home defense, and setting up the game winner.
This was the Wolves 30th win of the season, with Ty B. and Daniel L-C. capturing the Tier 3 Jennings trophy with a GAA of 1.29. The Wolves await the results of games on Sunday to determine their first round playoff opponent.
