In early September 2023, 24 children, aged 8 to 12, took to the ice at AMCC to enjoy an opportunity to try the beloved sport of hockey for the very first time.
Through the generous assistance of the City of Waterloo’s Sport and Recreation Grant program, the WMHA’s newly established ‘Welcome League’ launched a six week ‘try hockey’ program.

The participants were each outfitted with the equipment needed to take their first strides, and our team of volunteers assisted the children in learning basic skating and stick handling skills…. all in a supportive, inclusive, and fun environment!

The ‘Welcome League’ was established to provide an option for those unfamiliar with the sport to ‘give it a try’ without the barrier of a financial commitment.

While many families in our region have a long history of participation in hockey, for those who are new to Canada, face financial challenges, or who haven’t otherwise seen themselves represented in the sport, the ‘try hockey’ program aims to provide a comfortable access point to allow all children to feel welcome to try a new recreational activity that they can enjoy for years to come.
