Skills Competition - Day 1 Complete
Day 1 of the skills competition has ended for each group, and the results are in ….

Four teams were formed,
Team 1:  Ryan, James, Jack, Ethan, Nate
Team 2:  Liam, Keenan, Justin, Callum, Connor
Team 3:  Caleb, Myles, Adam, Logan, Nate
Team 4:  Khristian, Altay, Kaden, Josh, Connor

The boys battled hard on Tuesday and Friday, completing 4 of the 8 events:  Relay, Hardest Shot, Accuracy Shooting, and Save Streak (for the goalies) with the other 4 events coming Saturday and Sunday.

In the Relay, Team 1 and Team 4 each pulled off 2 points with 2 wins, while Team 2 and Team 3 battled hard to win once and pull off 1 point.  The key to the relay was the passing and who could loft a pass and hit the pilon, we had some magic (Keenan did it one shot), while others got their money’s worth on # of attempts (Khristian and Justin).  The highlight in the relays was watching the goalies score from one end of the ice to the other to complete the relay.  Nate and Connor both fired pucks like champions.  The efforts from everyone in the relay was fantastic, with Ryan, James, and Callum pushing their fellow teammates on Tuesday and Caleb and Kaden doing the same on Friday.  The boys had fun arranging who would do what part of the relay and it was great to witness the collaboration and excitement.

We moved on to the hardest shot, where it became the Jack and Josh show each winning their respective days, and Jack (aka Zdeno) pulling off the overall hardest shot as judged by the coaches.  Liam was a close second in the overall and arguably as hard as Jack’s shot, if only we had a radar gun.  Honorable mentions go to Myles, Altay, Justin, Kaden and Keenan.  Team 1 and Team 4 each collected a point with Jack and Josh’s victories, and Team 1 an extra point for Jack’s overall win.

The accuracy shooting (5 shot attempts to hit cross bar) was the Logan show.  Pulling off 3 out of 5 in the opening round, and then 2 out of 3 in the tie breaker.  Josh and Altay also pulled off 3 out of 5 on Friday, while Keenan pulled out the victory on Tuesday with 2 out of 5.  Honorable mentions go to Adam (2), Myles (1), and Ethan (1).  I would be remised if I didn’t mention that Connor pulled off a 1 out of 5, and will likely remind his buddies of this who scored 0 out of 5, well into their beer league careers.  Team 2 and Team 3 each collected a point with Keenan and Logan’s victories, and Team 3 an extra point for Logan’s overall victory.

The save streak event was the goalie’s time to shine, and it was evident why we have arguably the best goalie tandem in U13 MD in the Alliance.  How suiting that Nate pulled off the victory on Tuesday with Team 1 while Connor pull if off on Friday with Team 4.  Nate owned the overall victory with 13 straight saves, and Connor followed with 10.  Team 1 earns 2 points (one for win on Tuesday and one for overall), while Team 4 earns a point for Connor’s victory on Friday.  Now to the players who shone in this event … Adam, Adam, Adam will be in Connor’s nightmares for awhile ending Connor’s streak 3 times on Friday with signs of Crosby like dekes and shots, Khristian ended Nate’s on a few occasions showing incredible patience, Liam ending Nate’s 13 save streak that appeared to be going on forever, on Tuesday but nothing beats the stellar Datsyuk-like back hand deke from Ethan on Tuesday to end one of Nate’s streaks.

Fun times boys and looking forward to Day 2 for each group.
