As we continue to build and evolve our programming at Waterloo Minor Hockey, we want to share an important update regarding team designations at the A/AA level for the 2026/27 season.
In alignment with broader direction from the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF), Waterloo Minor Hockey will be designating our A/AA teams as AA teams for external competition purposes.
This approach allows us to proactively align with these changes in a way that supports both player development and the long-term strength of our program.<scribe-shadow id="crxjs-ext" data-crx="okfkdaglfjjjfefdcppliegebpoegaii" style="position: fixed; width: 0px; height: 0px; top: 0px; left: 0px; z-index: 2147483647; overflow: visible; visibility: visible;"></scribe-shadow>
πΉ What does this mean?
- Waterloo Wolves A/AA teams will be registered as AA teams for:
- Tournaments
- External Championships
- Teams will compete at the AA level externally, unless otherwise permitted by the event host (Tournament Directors should be contacted ahead of time for approval, should you wish to compete in an A tournament division).
πΉ What remains the same?
While this is a change in external designation, our internal structure and philosophy remain unchanged.
- Teams will continue to operate within an A/AA development model
- Our league will continue to follow a seeded format
- Teams will be regrouped based on performance throughout the season
- Reseeding will take place beginning approximately in December
This structure continues to ensure balanced competition and appropriate development opportunities for all players.
πΉ What does this mean for tryouts?
There is no change to who should attend tryouts.
- Players do not need to identify as “AA players” to participate
- Teams will continue to be formed using a mix of A and AA-level players
- Our focus remains on placing players in the right environment for their development and success
In addition, this designation provides added benefits to our program, including:
- The ability to hold tryouts in the second week
- Increased opportunity to compete at a higher level externally, supporting player growth
πΉ A thoughtful and proactive approach
This direction reflects careful consideration of:
- Player development pathways
- Competitive balance
- Long-term program sustainability
- Alignment with provincial standards
Our goal is to ensure that any changes are implemented in a way that continues to serve the needs of our players and families, while positioning Waterloo Minor Hockey for continued success.
πΉ Our commitment
At Waterloo Minor Hockey, we remain committed to:
- Delivering a strong development model
- Providing meaningful and competitive experiences
- Supporting players at all levels of the game
