The Waterloo Wolves are excited to kick off another season for our youngest players in the
Initiation Program (U6, U7, U8).
This is where the journey begins—where kids learn the fundamentals of hockey in a fun, supportive, and development-focused environment.
π What to Expect This Season
Our Initiation Program follows the Hockey Canada Player Pathway, designed to give kids the best possible start in the game. The focus is on building skating skills, confidence, teamwork, and fun—all at their own pace.
-
U6 (born 2020/21): First introduction to the ice, focused on basic skating and movement with some fun gameplay added in!
-
U7 (born 2019): Continued development of skating, puck handling, and teamwork through small-area games.
-
U8 (born 2018): Preparing players for House League and competitive play with more structured practices and half-ice weekly games.
π Start-Up Skates & “Evaluations”
At the beginning of the season, players will participate in start-up skates. These sessions are sometimes called “evaluations,” but they are not tryouts.
Instead, they are a way for coaches to:
- See where players are in their development
- Create balanced groups for practices and games
- Ensure every child has a positive and fun experience
For our youngest Wolves, these skates are low-pressure, fun, and supportive—just another opportunity to enjoy being on the ice.
