Canada vs Japan: Wolves Take on Tomakomai All-Stars in 2019 TOYOTA Cup
Submitted By WMHA on Thursday, March 7, 2019
With the 2017-18 Waterloo Wolves Minor Bantam AAA team (2004's) as the reigning Tri-City Hockey Challenge Champions, the 2018-19 Waterloo Wolves Minor Bantam AAA team (2005s) will have the honour of competing against the visiting Tomakomai Japan All-Stars on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00am at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex in the 2019 TOYOTA Cup!

Admission is free with a donation to the The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

***WMHA will be offering a FREE base hockey registration for the 2019-2020 season to a lucky WMHA member in attendance at the game!***

The game will also include an intermission shootout between players from the Waterloo, Kitchener Cambridge Peewee AAA teams.

Fabulous door prizes will also be offered throughout the game!

Hailing from Japan's northern island, Hokkaido, the Tomakomai team will travel a distance of some 9,556km to take part in the 20th edition of the hockey exhibition and cultural exchange, which started in 1998 and is sponsored by Toyota Motor Hokkaido (TMH) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC). The countries alternate hosting the exhibition series and cultural exchange, meant to connect young people through the universal language of hockey.

Head Coach Todd Townsend returns for the Wolves, after last leading the 2015-16 Waterloo Wolves Minor Bantam AAA team (2002's) to northern Japan in March 2016 for a week-long hockey journey which consisted of touring historical sites, visiting local schools and homes, and of course, playing some hockey.  Waterloo has won the last three (3) consecutive Tri-City Challenge Cups, and the honour to travel to Japan, with wins in 2013 vs Kitchener, 2015 vs Kitchener and 2017 vs Cambridge!!

The Japanese will arrive and get a whirlwind tour of southern Ontario, hitting sites like Niagara Falls and the Hockey Hall of Fame. They will also join the Waterloo players for visits at their schools and dinner at their homes as well as welcoming and farewell receptions.

We look forward to hosting our Friends from Tomakomai for the 3rd consecutive season!!
