Baseline Concussion Testing for 2017-18 Season
Submitted By WMHA on Tuesday, July 18, 2017
For the upcoming 2017-18 hockey season, Waterloo Minor Hockey Association (WMHA) is engaging SHIFT Concussion Management Inc. and a network of local health care providers to implement a concussion management protocol in an effort to improve support for coaches, trainers, players and their families with the goal of reducing the risk of premature return to play and re-injury.

Testing will be mandatory for all players (Major Atom and above) and will take place on two (2) separate weekends: August 19-20 and August 26-27.

SHIFT is a leader in Canada for providing an advanced approach to concussion awareness and rehabilitation, guiding injured athletes to a safe return to sport and daily life activities. The Shift Concussion network is the largest network of trained concussion management providers in Canada, with more than 450 across the country.

As part of the program, SHIFT will assist WMHA to implement a mandated baseline concussion testing initiative for the 2017-2018 season. Current best practice guidelines recommend a comprehensive baseline assessment tool that assesses all aspects of concussion. WMHA and SHIFT have a common goal to improve the process involving concussion recognition and management in youth sport and are committed to working together to develop and implement a targeted concussion management program that will be the first of its kind in the Region.
