The Minor Atom Wolves win the Richmond Hill Early Bird Select Tournament
in a 4 game sweep. The Wolves went undefeated in the tournament to bring home
the Gold Cup!
Games started on Friday against the Oakville Golden Knights defeating them 5-2. Our defense was on fire with our first goal coming from the point by Ethan E. Oakville responded with a lot of pressure as the game seemed even matched for the 1st period. The Wolves dug deep and responded in the 2nd period with goals from Jadon B and Matteo M, assisted by Cam V. The 3rd period would see the Wolves move ahead with 2 more goals from Emilios M and Jackson M. The Knights didn’t stand a chance against scoring from 5 different players.
Our afternoon game against the tough Burlington Bulldogs saw our goalies Brad R and Ciaran G each walk away with a shutout to defeat the Bulldogs 2-0. The scoring started in the 1st period with Adam H putting us on the scoreboard. Our defensive line made up of Liam C, Callum B, Adam K, Jackson M and Ethan E but missing Johannes S came out strong. The Bulldogs just couldn’t get through as their offensive attacks were shut down. The late 2nd period goal by Josh M sealed their fate. Winning both games earned the Wolves an automatic 1st place spot in the Semi Finals.
Even a snowstorm couldn’t keep the hungry Wolves and their families away. The Semi Finals saw some tough competition and a hungry North York Knights. After falling behind 2-0 the Wolves had to dig deep and come out fighting. A goal by Adam C, assisted by Callum S brought the game within reach and the Wolves never looked back. The scoring continued with a pivotal tying goal from Joerge D and the Wolves kept attacking. With Just 29 seconds on the clock Emilios M buried the 3rd goal earning us a well deserved spot in the Finals!
The Finals saw a tough Burlington team out for revenge. The pace was set early in the game when Burlington got the first goal. The Wolves gave it all they had as they tied the game by a goal from Jadon B. The Wolves 2nd goal by Jadon B brought the Wolves ahead, but only for a few seconds as Burlington responded with a quick goal to tie up the game. The Wolves families led by Kate Etheridge cheered us on and gave the boys the momentum needed to keep fighting hard. The final minutes of play literally had our goalie Ciaran G standing on his head as he fought off the Bulldogs to keep us in the game. A quick time out from our Coaches as they discussed their game plan strategy. The game was now in overtime with a 3 on 3 sudden victory 4th period. At the 30 sec mark Jadon B got the winning goal, his 3rd goal Hat Trick off a pass from Adam C. The Arena erupted as the Waterloo Wolves swept the tournament.
The Coaches are extremely proud of every player on the team, it was a collective effort from start to finish as they worked united to earn this victory!
