Novice Select Wolves Finish in Second Place in Niagara Falls!
The Novice Select Wolves put on an incredible show this past week at the Ange Giajnorio Memorial Winter Thaw Tournament in Niagara Falls, winning their first 5 games, and finally succumbing to fatigue against a strong team from Caledon in the finals....

The action kicked off early Monday morning against the Hamilton Dofasco Steelhawks.  The Wolves would throw everything but the kitchen sink at the Steelhawks, racing for every puck, and giving Hamilton no time to set up.  Goals were scored by Alec L, Eason Y, Lucas T and Gavin A, who netted 2.  The story of the game however, was Waterloo’s goaltending as the Wolves were outshot 20-16.  Deio G and Josh C had a very strong performance, on route to a 5-1 win.

Later that day, the boys would find themselves up against the Whitby Wildcats.  The boys, noticeably tired after the morning game would do their best to hold off the Whitby attack.  Gavin A, Eason Y and Sam M scored in the first, second and third periods, giving the Wolves what looked like a clear victory.  Unfortunately, the Wildcats had other ideas as they charged back with two quick ones late in the third period.  The Wildcats would spend most of the dying minutes in the Wolves end with their goalie pulled.  The Parents all stood nervously as the boys frantically tried to clear it, with no luck.  Finally, with 12 seconds left, the Wolves managed to blast the puck out of the zone to end the game with a 3-2 win.

The next morning, the boys would arrive well rested to play the Stouffville Clippers.  The Wolves would be too much for the Clippers to handle, as Waterloo scored 4 in the second and 1 in the third (Sacha W with 2, Sam M (who also racked up 2 assists), Gavin A and Lucas T with 1) on route to a 5-0 win.  That afternoon, the boys would play their final round robin game against the Belleville Jr. Bulls.  The Wolves would overwhelm the Bulls with 2 goals from Gavin A., 2 from Alec L, 2 from Callum T., and 1 from Lucas T.

With that win, the Wolves secured the top seed in the tournament, with a semi-final against a team the Wolves knew well, Hamilton Chedoke Express.   The Wolves have met Chedoke twice in regular season play, with Hamilton showing a lot of improvement from the first game to the second.  This time Chedoke would come out flying, scoring a goal late in the first period to put the Wolves behind for their first time in the tournament.  The Wolves showed patience and perseverance however, with Lucas T. finally putting one in the net to start off the second period.  The score would remain tied until the third period when Nohl A sent the puck to Terry L along the boards.  Terry would poke it ahead for Caden B who then stormed down the ice and put a hard shot past the goalie to secure the W.

That win earned the boys a trip to the finals later that day against the Caledon Hawks.  The Hawks would come out very strong, putting shot after shot on Josh C, who kicked everything aside in the first period.  Although the Wolves were outshot 7-3 in the first, it was a determined Lucas T who skated down the ice with fire in his eyes, beating both defense and scoring the first goal of the game at 2:47 in the first period.  The Hawks would continue their attack in the second period, with the Wolves starting to show their fatigue.  At 9:01 in the second, Caledon would finally solve Josh C’s determined goaltending to tie things up.   The boys gave the best effort they could, but halfway through the third period, when their breathing was heavy and their legs were jello, they could take no more.  Caledon would score 2 to dash the boy’s hopes of claiming the championship.  One might think that such a loss would crush the kids, but the mood in the dressing room was exactly what a coach wants to see.  The boys were proud of their accomplishment and knew they put everything they had into it.  They seemed to understand that they were coming together as a team like never before, and at the end of the day, one loss in a hockey game should never be allowed to overshadow how hard they’ve worked to get where they are.

Well done boys!  You deserve a nice long break for your efforts (but I’ll see you tomorrow at practice anyways!)
