A convoy of cars headed out from Waterloo last Thursday last week, as the PW (and Minor Bantam) Black Wolves made their way to Ottawa.

The boys were keen to get back in action after coming through a rough loss to St Thomas in the regular season.

The tournament started off for the Wolves with an exciting 2-2 tie against the Stittsville Rams, with the Wolves scoring the first goal, then the Rams, then the Wolves again, and finally the Rams putting a final goal in net with 3 minutes left in the game.  The second game followed a similar pattern, with the score at 2-1 at the start of the third period, before a Brampton goal mid-way through the third.  Unfortunately, luck was against the Wolves, and a puck got over the goal line with just 30 seconds remaining, leaving the score at 3-2 for Brampton.  The third game against Kanata broke the mould: after ending the first period at 1-1, an all-action second period saw Kanata score a quick two goals to make it 3-1, and held the lead throughout the game, which ended in a 5-3 loss for the Wolves.

That put the Wolves at the bottom of the group, and set up a rematch with top ranked Kanata on Sunday next morning.  As in the first two games of the weekend, the Wolves opened the scoring, with their opposition matching the first goal, then the Wolves taking the lead again.  But this time, the Wolves turned on a stellar defensive effort to keep the Blazers out for the rest of the game, putting the Wolves through to the final game, to great cheers from the Wolves' section of the crowd, and the delight of all the drivers.

Despite high hopes, the heavy schedule and adrenalin surges of the weekend had apparently taken their toll, and the final game against the Rams ended in a 3-0 loss for the visitors. The Wolves ended their appearance in Ottawa with a great display of sportsmanship, making a bridge for the tournament championship home team to pass under.

Thanks to the efforts of both the parents and the coaches, the team made the very most of their off-ice time in Ottawa.  Along with the traditional trips to the hotel pool, mini-sticks games and team dinner, the Wolves went on team sightseeing walks, a very cool tour of Parliament House with a trip up the clock tower, and, along with the Minor Bantam Black Wolves (who the boys have seen in passing at a number of tournaments and games in past years), a trip to Gatineau to see the local Olympiques take on the Quebec Remparts.  Reports suggest that this gave some boys a chance to put their French skills to use, though some parents may have preferred them to be less vocal in their support of the visitors, who came away with the win.

And from those who were able to follow the action from afar, and no doubt also from the players, a big thankyou to the parents and coaches who spent so many hours on the road to give the kids a great experience.
