Game Report: Jay Nijhuis

The Coaching staff knew this game was going to be a measuring stick for our team at the half way point of the season. Not only had this BJC Architect team come back to beat us in the first game of the season 4-3 with 2 goals in the last minute of play, but they had just defeated Allstate last week, a team widely regarded as one of, if not the, best team in the league.

Our team has been getting better week in and week out. We have been working very hard on a breakout system, defensive coverage and offensive formations and we have slowly been seeing these aspects creep into games. Obviously it will take some time, but the progress IS there and we couldn't be more proud of the boys and their effort.

We were a couple of men down today with Derek R. on Injured Reserve and Dustin K. unavailable, so we proceeded with two full lines and 4 D-Men.

BJC got off to a quick start and led the game 2-0 before our team got some traction in the second period. It all started when Ethan M. burst into the offensive zone and fed a slick pass over to Simon H. who proceeded to flip the puck over the sprawled goalie to get Skills Plus on the board. That goal seemed to light a spark, as soon after, Connor M. fired a wrist shot past the goalie to tie the game 2-2. Connor M. added to his season goal total with a beautiful end to end rush that ended with a sick backhand forehand deke and a 3-2 lead.

That lead was short lived though as BJC came down the ice and picked up a loose puck in a goal mouth scramble and roofed it top shelf to make the game 3-3 after two periods.

In the third period, BJC game at us in waves and due to a few defensive zone breakdowns they scored a wrap around goal to make it 4-3 and then a puck squeezed through the legs of David B. and ended up on the stick of a wide open Orange player for a tap in to make it 5-3.

As has been the case all season, our boys NEVER quit and were all over the competition for the last 2:30 minutes as Skills Plus pulled their goaltender and played 6 on 5 until the final buzzer. Lots of chances were there towards the end but we were unable to pot another goal so the final score was 5-3.

That moves our record to 3-4-1.

Have a great week.
