Waterloo Gold Starts the Year With a Win
Waterloo Gold started the new year with a decisive 4-0 win against Kitchener Red on Wednesday evening.

The win keeps the Wolves in first place in the league standings and comes as a welcome relief to the team, whose performance has been average at best lately with a 3-1-4 record in the second half of the season, and a disappointing performance at the Stratford Silver Stick tournament between Christmas and New Year's.

Lenizky opened the scoring in the second period after Hemmerich took at pass from Arthur. This was followed quickly by another as Schmitz found an opening in the crowd in front of the net and passed it to Peake who tipped it in. Then Onuska fired one at the Kitchener goalie who stopped it with his pads but failed to cover it and Lenizky took advantage to score his second goal of the night. The last goal of the game also came in the second period as Duckett went end-to-end weaving between the Kitchener defence right to the net and then made a beauty pass to Hayes who fired it in. Guerriero had the shutout and shared the player of the game with Lenizky. Great team effort by the Wolves!!

Waterloo will be in Etobicoke at the practice ice for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday for an exhibition game against the Humber Valley Sharks. Then to Hamilton on Sunday. Next weekend they go on the road to the Pittsburgh Winter Classic tournament where they will see a few familiar faces (Stratford Warriors and London Jr. Knights Gold), three teams from Pennsylvania, and two teams from Michigan.

The regular season wraps up with five more games for the Wolves from January 26 to February 10, and then it's into the playoffs with a best 3 out of 5 series format.
