Waterloo Ice Wolves Refused To Give Up
(by Greg Brown) Feb 25 saw the Ice Wolves travel to Kitchener to take on the Blue team, a team they were ahead of in the standings by a mere 2 points. The Kitchener Blue team is also a team that has given the Ice Wolves a lot of grief in their last two meetings.

Challenged by their coaches to bring everything they have for this game, the Ice Wolves came out strong, but had a hard time getting shots on the Kitchener goalie.

Kitchener Blue went up 1-0 when a bad bounce slipped by Wolves goalie Mischa Stastna. The Wolves responded in kind with a great goal by Mike Rintche who buried a rebound off the shot of Kyle Maloney. However, the very next shift the Kitchener team went ahead with a high wrist shot that beat Stastna. The end of the first period found the Ice Wolves down 2-1.

In the second period, Cooper Way showed everyone why you never give up or stop fore-checking. With the Wolves making an entire line change, Way found himself alone on the ice in the oppositions end. As he charged towards their end to apply pressure on the puck carrier, the puck came loose in front of the net, and Way made no mistake by putting it past the Kitchener goalie to tie the game up.

However, once again Kitchener responded by scoring the next 2 goals, going up 4-2. The score stayed this way until the 5:30 mark when Way fired another shot at the goalie, although it was stopped Rintche was all over the rebound to score his second of the game, putting the Wolves within one.

Showing absolutely no quit in them at all, the Wolves turned the pressure up in the final minutes. Way broke free on a break-a-way, needling the puck through the Kitchener team before netting a wrist shot that tied the game.

Stastna took care of preserving the tie for the remainder of the game with some strong goaltending, giving the Ice Wolves a hard earned point in the standings.

Strong on defense for the Ice Wolves were Aiden Coffin and Hunter Baird, making key stops on many opposing breakaways. There was also great back checking by forwards Kyle Maloney, Cal Reesor and Ryan Hanson.

Leading the scoring were Cooper Way and Mike Rintche with 2 goals each, while Way and Maloney each had an assist.

Great job by the Ice Wolves of never giving up, as they look to use this momentum moving forward for the remainder of their games.
